Job Description: Military and Veterans Unit
Grant Based Position: Assistant to the Managing Attorney
Lone Star legal Aid (LSLA) seeks a full time Assistant to the Managing Attorney (AMA) for its Houston Branch Office, Military and Veterans Unit.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Ensures the administrative function of the Military and Veterans Unit (MVU) is operative. This position sees that all client and other records are maintained according to the program procedures. The AMA assures that all client files and records are properly prepared on a timely basis. This person performs regular secretarial tasks for the Military and Veterans Unit (MVU) including all typing for the Managing Attorney. Handles the initial disposition of problem calls and “walk-in” clients; explains program intake, appointment and other policies to applicants. Monitors and takes necessary actions and makes recommendations to ensure compliance with Lone Star Legal Aid policies and procedures. Assists the Managing Attorney with the development, implementation and monitoring of unit policies and procedures and ensures that all support staff and volunteer positions are appropriately trained. The AMA works with the Managing Attorney regarding the initial client intake processing. He/she participates in scheduling meetings, circuit riding, reception desk coverage, all accounting procedures, including requests for payment, and other office routines. This position also assures communication of program policies to staff. This position may be responsible for training other clerical staff when necessary.
Grant Based Through August 31, 2017: Texas Access to Justice Foundation
Minimum Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent; three years office experience, one of which must have been spend in the legal field; preference given to person with some college or business education.
Minimum Skills and Abilities:
Type 60 wpm; Basic bookkeeping skills, exemplary office skills; including ability to transcribe documents from dictation or audio tape; Demonstrate ability to organize and train support personnel, strong client service orientation; and ability to work under pressure.
